As key components of the motor drive system which are used to lower speed and increase torque, the automobile gear reducer characterizes the quality of the transmission system. Hypoid gears are the core components of the automobile gear reducer. The quality of main reducer is mainly represented with the meshing performance of gear pair, which can be directly evaluated by the gearing mesh pattern. The position, shape and size of gearing mesh pattern are always important parameters to evaluate main reducer. The traditional human visual inspection is easily affected by subjective factors; however, the machine vision technology has been applied more and more widely in industrial fields. The focus of the research is to extract the feature of gear meshing mark image with digital image processing.Firstly, the enhancement processing has been executed to the meshing mark image of the hypoid gears. After the color gearing mesh image has been converted to grayscale image, three ways are used to do the enhancement processing, which are based on the histogram equalization, image content and linear gray transform. There is noticeable improvement for all these ways.Secondly, the edge has been extracted from the meshing mark image of the hypoid gears. The ways which are based on differential operator, linear filter and wavelet transform are applied to exact the edge of the enhanced image in the paper. Then the exaction effects are compared. The Roberts operator, Sobel operator and Prewitt operator are introduced in detail for detecting edge as differential operators. The Canny operator and LOG operator which are used most widely at present are employed to detect edge as linear filter. The principle of wavelet edge detection is introduced emphatically, and several commonly used wavelet functions are used to exact the edge.Finally, the extraction and analysis of the image characteristics has been proposed to the meshing mark image of the hypoid gears. The morphology theory is applied for further treatment so as to building complete gear marks and tooth profile edge. Then the characteristic parameters based on mark image are calculated, and the edge extraction system that based on Lab VIEW is set up for hypoid gear meshing mark image.
