Laser radar (Lidar) is a product of the combination of laser, atmospheric optics, target and environmental characteristics, radar, optical electromechanical integrationand computing technology. It has much more spatial resolution than the microwaveradar, it can also be used for long-distance detection, large-scale imaging and has manyother advantages over the microwave radar. Laser radar (Lidar) as a new research areais a hot issue at home and abroad. In this paper, the basic characteristics of a Gaussian beam are analyzed. First, several important parameters of the Gaussian beam and Gaussian beam imagingtransformation. Second, the range equation of a laser radar and the target scatteringcharacteristics are studied, based on these theories the actual measurements of thetarget’s LRCS are discussed. In the measurement of LRCS, the target should be illuminated by Uniform beam.In this paper, the measurement errors of the LRCS owing to the use of Gaussian beamare analyzed, and a useful method to compensate the errors is proposed.
