Fiber amplifier (OFA) has been widely applied by wired communication network because it has advantages of broad frequency bandwidth, huge communication capacity, low transmission loss, anti-electromagnetic interference and so on. OFA which has been abundantly used in commerce is erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). However, due to the characteristics of EDFA, it could not provide a sufficiently high output power, and has very harsh requirement to pump source. However, with a greatly increase in communication services, the OFA which has a high output power is vastly demanded. The problems of EDFA could be solved by erbium-ytterbium co-doped fiber amplifier (EYDFA) with the double-clad structure, which is able to obtain a larger saturated output power and transmission bandwidth, so EYDFA contains a great of potential market value.In this paper, EYDFA with double-clad structure is in-depthly investigated. Directions for improvement of EDFA and the principle which EYDFA implements amplification are narrated in great detail respectively. We also explain that the problems faced by EDFA are how to be effectively solved by EYDFA with double-clad structure so as to EYDFA could provide a higher output power. The primary parameters of EYDFA impact on the gain of and the output power of the amplifier, which is analyzed through VPI simulation in order to provide a reference for the core of the design.Under the guidance of double-clad fiber theory and the principle of EYDFA, with the purpose of meeting the requirements of OFA to high output power, this paper design and optimize EDFA and EYDFA respectively, and making them constitute a cascaded structure. When the input power vary from-36dBm to6dBm and the maximum pump power is12.5W, the maximum signal gain of the cascaded OFA is69.95dB, the maximum output power is36.89dBm, the pumping conversion efficiency is39%, and the noise figures vary from6.5dB to7.7dB.The cascaded OFA exhibit the characteristics of good performance.
