Bi-static (multi-static) radar based on external illuminators has potentialsuperiority and quite strong viability. The characteristic of external illuminators such asbroadcasting or television stations etc. is briefly discussed in this paper. Subsequently, the fundamental principium of the bi-static radar is produced in terms of the geometry, distance and Doppler relationship. And then, the technique of passive radar imagingespecially inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging is introduced with severalalgorithms in common use. The model of single transmitters and single receiver helpsus build an imaging model of multi-static passive radar. Then several passive radarimaging algorithms based on the model of multiple transmitters and single receiver aswell as the model of single transmitter and multiple receivers are presented, which isreferred to as polar coordinates algorithm, based on the model of single transmitter andmultiple receivers, and polar coordinates algorithm, direct Fourier reconstructionalgorithm (DFR algorithm), ESPRIT algorithm based on the model of multipletransmitters and single receiver. The performance analysis and comparison of thesimulations demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithms.
