The passive location technique which has been widely used in radar, sonar, navigation and communication is an important research content in signal processing andelectronic warfare. As the passive location technique can confirm the target locationinformation without transmitting any electromagnetic wave, it has many advantagessuch as long detected distance, better security and strong anti-jamming, which canenhance the survive viability of the system in the electronic warfare. The main content of this dissertation is the solution of the nonlinear optimizationproblem in Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) location using the modified Newtonmethod. In this method, the target function is determined by maximum likelihoodestimation first and then a positive definite symmetry matrix is constructed, the targetfunction is solved by modified Newton method. Because of the positive definiteness ofconstructed matrix, the algorithm is convergence and no longer sensitive to the initialvalue. The location accuracy can also achieve a good precision with an inaccurate initialvalue. With the characteristic that the BS can deliver an accurate AOA measurement ofMS, a hybrid TDOA/AOA location method based on modified Newton method isintroduced with its performance is proved and simulated.
