As the newest international video coding standard, H.264/AVC is developed by theJoint Video Team (JVT) which consisted of ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group(VCEG) and ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group(MPEG). The new H.264/AVCstandard not only achieves about50%bite rate saving over previous video codingstandards, but also is able to support various network environment. Unfortunately, thenew, improved and complex video coding tools that have been introduced in thisstandard introduce significant computational overhead to the encoder. Fast intra modedecision is needed.This paper describes the key technology of H.264/AVC standard, and then thefocus on the intra prediction. After analysis of several previous algorithms, this paperproposed a fast intra prediction method based on variance and dominant edge strength.The experimental results showed that the new scheme was able to achieve a reductionof about50%encoding time without considerably performance loss.
