Along with the development of digital printing technology, the traditional filmimaging is replaced by digital technology gradually in the photography industry. Inearlier stage, digital film technique is widely used to output image. But in recent years,color ink jet printer get great improvement which can compare with digital film.In commercial and professional photography area, many photographers choosecolor inkjet printer to output the digital photos. Due to the different devicecharacteristics of the printer, the color reproduction is not accurate. It’s necessary to usecolor management technique to control the color reproduction processes. Colormanagement specification that developed by the International Color Consortium (ICC)is mostly widely used, which introduce device independent color space to achieveaccurate color reproduction in different devices..Most of the color management software is only able to celebrate the colorcharacteristic of printer regardless of the color characteristic of the image. In this way,gamut mapping algorithm was chosen and implemented without considering the imagecharacteristic. Using simple compress algorithm will significantly reduce the saturationand chroma of the output image. But only using clipping algorithm will remove a lot ofdetails in high saturation area. In this way, image output cannot reach high saturationand get enough details in the area where color is changing gradually.In this paper, requirement of photo printing in photography industry is analyzedtogether with color management technology. A gamut mapping algorithm based onimage characteristic is proposed; and a printer color management system is designedaccording to ICC specification. New gamut mapping algorithm is based on fixed-coreCUSP algorithm, but divides the core of CUSP into five levels in PCS. Then core levelof gamut mapping algorithm is selected according to the image color characteristicinformation. When printing the image, the designed color management system willselect the redering intent according to the image characteristic, and create ICC profile.High chroma image like computer graphics and advertise pictures will use bigger CUSPcore to get high saturation and protect the chroma; natural pictures and portrait imageswill adopt smaller CUSP core to ensure enough details in the area where color changesgradually.
