Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has been widely used in many areas in our daily lives, e.g.logistics management access control、 intelligent authentication and so on. Although RFID brings a lot of convenience for us, the security and privacy issues are drawing more and more concerns and those issues are considered to be the main bottleneck for RFID application. The security requirements for RFID tags are discussed in this paper and a security scheme is proposed to improve the security of ISO18000-6C protocol. A security enhanced tag chip has been designed、 implemented and tested. In the protocol layer, the ISO18000-6C protocol is analyzed and a novel security scheme is proposed. The mutual authentication between the reader and the tag in the security scheme can prevent the attacks of tracings、 counterfeiting and unauthorized access. Hummingbird (HB) cryptographic algorithm is used to encrypt the data to be transmitted, which can prevent the eavesdropping attack. The application of Message authentication code (MAC) can tell if a message is modified by an attacker. FSM based architecture is designed as the tag digital baseband for the low cost reason. The secure engine is based on a new low power and low cost cryptographic algorithm-HB algorithm. This security enhanced tag is verified on FPGA platform and the whole tag chip has been taped out on SMIC0.13EE process. The area of the chip is1X1.2mm2and the digital part is0.5X0.35mm2. The test results show this tag chip can work in both standard ISO18000-6C mode and security enhanced ISO18000-6C mode.
