With the development and wide application of Internet technology,multimediaapplications have become the main part of the Internet applications, especially Video onDemand (VoD). Early video-on-demand systems are mostly based on client/server mode.All the clients request the service from a centralized server. With the increase of users, theserver load is increasing, which make the server the performance bittleneck of the wholesystem and affect the the performance of the entire video-on-demand system. Asintroducing Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology to a VoD system, the resource share among thepeers significantly shifts the workload of the server. Existing P2P VoD are mostly derivedfrom BitTorrent (BT), which can be represented by BiToS.In this thesis, the peer side of BiToS VoD system is designed and implemented. The thesisfirstly introduces the overall structure of the BiToS video on demand system, and thenfocuses on the detailed design of the composed modules of peer side and the interfacebetween these modules. BiToS VoD system consists of a tracke, peers and a portal server.The peer side consists of a transmission module, a local streaming media server, and aplayer. The transmission module uses BiToS protocol, which is quite suit forvideo-on-demand system. Through the local streaming media server, transmission moduleconnected with the player, and the video data can be transferred from the transmissionmodule to the player.The main contribution of this thesis is the implementation of the peer side of a BiToS VoDsystem. The test of the presented peer prototype of BiToS VoD system shows that it isfully functioned with BiToS P2P transfer and on-demand video playback. Finally, thestudy results are briefly summarized, and further studies are proposed.
