Information is prosperous and flowing in modern society. With the development of newapplications, such as VoIP、IPTV、HDTV, users are extending their requirement of bandwidth.Nowadays, access network techniques need to upgrade to meet the business requests. Amongthe various techniques, the optical access network based on the optical fibre has shown itsgreat advantages in the transmission distance and network bandwidth capacity. Passiveoptical network (PON) technology which has flexible access method and high capacitybroadband characteristic is becoming the mainstream of optical access network. Meanwhile,radio-over-fibre technology combines the optical fibre communication and high frequencyradio wave and is considered as a novel wideband, low installation and maintenance costcommutation system. So RPON, the integration of these two above, makes the system astrong candidate for future optical access network.This thesis mainly studies the optical millimeter wave generation in RPON. In thispaper,we study key technologies and applications in RPON. During the research period,firstly literature consult is done through reading relative paper to study and analyze thecharacteristics of RPON. Secondly,RPON architecture and key technologies are designed.Thirdly, we successfully demonstrated the transmission of uncompressed1080p radio signalin RPON. Finally, a novel optical millimeter wave generation method was proposed and atsame time several experiments and simulation related to this method were conducted.This paper firstly gives a brief introduction about RPON and millimeter wave,especially on optical millimeter generation technologies. Then the approachment of opticalmillimeter wave generation using MZM modulator was described in details. Besides, there isanalysis of four wave mixing effect in SOA and application in millimeter wave generation.And based on FWM in SOA, new method of millimeter generation was proposed. Next,relative experiments and simulations were done. Finally the thesis gives detailed analysis onRPON network and summarizes results and prospect the future research of optical millimeterwave generation in RPON.
