Promoted by the increasing communication demands of people, the features include large-capacity, high-speed, mobile and low cost will become the basic requirements of the communication system for the future. In terms of the reliability, capacity, coverage, mobility and security, the radio over fiber(Ro F) technology which integrates the optical communication and the wireless communication will be certainly one of the promising technologies and have great theoretical and applied value for the future broadband access communication system.Based on this, applications of the four-wave mixing in Semiconductor Optical Amplifier(SOA-FWM) effect in Ro F system will be investigated in the dissertation. At first, the research background and the research status of the relevant content will be presented. Then the related basic theories of the Ro F technology and SOA-FWM effect will be expounded and analyzed. On this basis, the proposals for the application of SOA-FWM effect in Ro F system will be theoretically studied and verified. Meantime, the SOA-FWM effect in RoF system will also be experimentally studied. The main characteristics and innovations of this dissertation are as the following:1. The multi-frequency millimeter-waves(MMWs) generation and the diversified services support in Ro F system have been studied. A Ro F application system with scalable generation of multi-frequency multi-service MMWs enabled by SOA-FWM effect will be proposed to achieve the generation of multi-frequency and multi-services MMWs as well as flexibly allocate the MMWs resources according to the demands of each base station. In addition, based on the basic theory and model of the SOA-FWM effect, the optimization methods for the performance of the proposed system will be given.2. The implementation approaches of optical virtual private network(OVPN) in the passive optical network(PON) and the RoF system have been studied. An implementation approach of Ro F-OVPN system with multi-frequency MMWs based on the SOA-FWM effect will be proposed, which will realize the inter-OVPN communication between the base stations of the different Ro F sub-system by using the dual-pump SOA-FWM effect, and the intra-OVPN communication between the base stations of the same Ro F sub-system as well as the uplink and downlink transmission. Moreover, in the proposal, the frequencies of the MMWs carrying OVPN data and uplink data are 58 GHz and 60 GHz respectively, which belong to international unlicensed band and will be better applied to future Ro F system effectively.3. The SOA-FWM effect in Ro F system will be studied experimentally. Base on which the gain saturation characteristics of SOA are studied and analyzed, the experiments of single-pump and dual-pump FWM effect will be done when the SOA works on saturated gain region and linear gain region respectively. At last, the factors that affect the conversion efficiency of FWM effects will be investigated and discussed.
