The evolution of wireless networks has result in multiple wirelesstechnologies, such as3rd Generation Partnership Project Long-TermEvolution Advanced (3GPP LTE-A) cellular networks, WorldwideInteroperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), Wireless Local AreaNetworks (WLAN) and etc. Heterogeneous networks are defined as thenetworks which contain multiple different Radio Access Technologies (RATs).They connect various networks, and provide universal access, as well asseamless and ubiquitous mobility support.Traditional communication systems are based on Piont to Multipointpattern, in which the Base Station (BS) that possesses the whole set ofresource, controls the user access and provide service to User Equipments(UEs). In such pattern, deploying and maintaining BSs requires a largeamount of both human and physical resource. Distributed networks whichconsist of independent and autonomous users, on the other hand, requiremuch less operation expense. In distributed networks, with no managementcenter, UEs’ incomplete information acquiring and the desire of maximizingtheir own performence will easily impair others’ performance, thus impairingthe performance of the whole network. Therefore, it’s essential to design amechanism that gives every UE the incentive to cooperate for efficient andfair resource allocation.Game theory is proved to be a powerful and effective analytical tool forthe research on the optimized decision making of individual players underconflict circumstances. In this paper, we research on the cooperative and competitive behavior autonomous UEs based on game theory, and design themechanism that result in cooperation among UEs which further leads toefficient and fair resource allocation. On the research of cell/transmission mode selection in heterogeneousmulticast networks, we consider the channel used for multicast service as theresource that UEs are compete for, and the power of maintaining a channel asthe price to pay for such resource. Then we designed an auction mechanismfor UEs’ cell/transmition mode selection. In the algorithm design, we firstpresent an auction framework between the BS and UEs, and then give eachchannel a specific price based on the power comsuption as well as thedifferent characteristics of multicast and unicast channels when dealing withsurplus (the situation when demand exceeds supply). At last, we design asimple protocol to ultilize the mechanism in the real system. The simulationresult shows that the scheme not only has rapid convergence speed but alsohas good performance dealing with UEs’ mobility. On the research of cooperative data dissemination in cellular-VANET(Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork) wireless networks, we first select vehicles withcellular interface and good channel condition as the mobile gateways in eachdisjoint section, after that, we design a coalition game framework in thevehiclular context to give each vehicle the incentive to select the father node(the previous vehicle in transmission path) that maximize its transmission rate.To deal with vehicles’ high mobility, we put forward a simple merge and splitalgorithm that enables vehicles to swtich to the optimal coalition wheneverchannel condition changes. The simulation result shows that through coalitiongame, vehicles are capable of choosing the coaltions that maximizetransmission rate in linear time. There are still many problems to be investigated for the application ofgame theory in heterogeneous wireless networks. In practice, datatransmission in the uplink faces the cooperative and competive problems too, which requires new framework and mechanism to deal with new issues thatmay occur.
