Quality control has gained high significance in steel production, and the defects on the surface of cold steel strips was main factors to evaluate the quality of cold strips, good surface quality of cold steel strips is the prior condition of gaining the market. Traditional surface defects inspection done by human inspectors is far from satisfactory, it has many shortcomings,such as bad real‐time performance, low detected degree of confidence, formidable circumstance of detection. Therefore developing an automatic surface quality inspection system is a common demand for steel corporations. As the performance monitoring equipment of surface quality, Surface defects inspection system has an important practical value in production. Recent years, with the development of computer technology and optoelectronic technology, automatic strip surface inspection trends to intelligent, high precision, high speed on‐line detection.By studying the common strip surface defects, we found that the defect has some features, such as with boundary, irregular texture, uneven. Based on the boundary of the defect, we using a defect detection method based on edge detection to determine the location of defects, this method using the existing edge detection algorithm to identify the edge of the defects in the strip image. Based on the irregular texture, we using a defect detection method based on PHOT (Phase Only Transform) algorithm to determine the location of defects, this method using the PHOT algorithm to identify the irregular texture in the strip image. Integrating the results of these two detect methods to further improve the precision. We using a defect detection method based on linear laser to identify the uneven palace to determine the location of defects. According the proposed solutions, we implement a Surface Inspection System of Steel Strip, and particular present the architecture, core modules and implementation of the system.At last we proved that comparing some existing system, this system has superior performance by performance test.
