For cellular network operators energy efficiency is a major issue to not only achievesmaximum profit, but also to make the system environment friendly. Due to this emergingtrend of making cellular network energy efficient has called for the researchers to improvethe future technologies so to reduce the CO2emission and handle the energy crises. Theresearch carried out in this field of green communication is broadly based on the basestation side whether it is the energy efficient hardware or the deployment strategies. Asadvanced communication protocols and techniques have been invented, now the mainfocus of the research has been on making these technologies energy efficient. In this thesisreport I present the methods and steps taken in this regard, to improve the powerefficiency of the network and summarize some techniques to enable an energy efficient or“green” cellular network. We also review the current research projects related to theenergy efficiency of the cellular network as of base station cooperation and optimizednetwork planning.Since in a cellular network major chunk of energy is consumed at the base stationstherefore this part has been under consideration for energy efficiency. The main focus ofthis thesis was to study the effects of adding small cells in traditional macro base stationdeployed in cellular network and how heterogeneous network deployment based on macroand micro cells can be used to achieve the goal of energy efficient cellular network. Theperformance metrics such as area power consumption and system capacity has been usedto evaluate the potential improvements in the energy consumption and system capacity ofthe heterogeneous networks. Finally it was shown that addition of micro sites increasepower consumption but the high increase in the system capacity is of much moreimportance as it negates the need of additional macro base station. Which if added will be consuming much more energy as compared to the micro base stations. Thus as a wholeenergy efficiency do get improved of the system.
