Robot design and making receives great attention from educatorsand educational institutions, because it is a good platform for highschool students to learn artificial intelligence, computer science, automotive engineering and general science. Many courses involve theconstruction and programming of simple robots.Although these coursesare excellent for teaching general engineering concepts, especiallyelectrical and mechanical engineering, the teaching effectiveness of thegeneral approach of engineering is not satisfied after these courses. In the past eight years,by using the lower cost, wider used LegoTechnic, I finished school-based teaching materials, based on the form ofproject activities, carried out early project experience courses, usingnetwork teaching mode, and started from the design of class teaching todevelop students’ good engineering habits. In this course, teachers give lessons to students how to do researchand how to explore, how to make them take advantage of the experienceof the research process, andhow to master the methods of scientificresearch.Teachers also design and produce educational robots to meet thedifferent needs of teaching. This article will introduce aneducational robot, designed for secondary school students. Students can make the use of thesurface tension of water and make the robot float on the water. To makethe teaching aidslight enough, teachers choose a high-performance,low-power8-bit AVR microprocessor, ATtiny13chip, to design amicrocontroller, and use the change of photodioderesistance from thechange of infrared ray, to track the targets on the surface of the water onthe infrared object and providethe studentswinAVR, a friendlyprogramming environment.Meanwhile, the teachers try to evaluate the full range of students’engineering capabilities, and achieved good results.
