Today, with the rapid improvement of internet, information and optical communicationtechnology, it has become the focus of global network operators by using optical fiber intoaccess network. Currently, optical accessing is a necessary method to upgrade bandwidthcapabilities and expand the business. The GPON technology has become the leader inoptical accessing technology and will be the mainstream of optical access technology withits high speed, high efficiency, various kinds of service and high quality of service. So it isof great significance to inprove the using of fiber which is being in place of copper byresearching further on GPON, especially it can promote the development of GPONtechnology by researching on the key technology of GPON.This article researched deeply on the error control technology on GPON terminal. Themain error control technology that has been introduced by GPON system is the ForwardError Correction(FEC) technology. It can reduce the bit error rate on the receiver andincrease the reliability of communications by using this technology. At the same time, it canlow down the demand of high performance optical device and reduce the cost of equipmentby reducing the BER. It has been regulated that the system needs to use RS code to achieveits FEC function. The RS code is a well-known as a class of linear block code by its highcapability in error correcting,and it can detecte and correct random or burst error incommunication system to improve the dfficiency and reliability of data transmission. So itis widely used in various electronic productions and digital communication system. It is soimprotant to improve the performance of the GPON system by designing a RScoder or aRsdecoder with high efficiency and high speed.The main contents of this article are as follows: Firstly, in the introduction part,introduced the topic background and the research significance, the GPON system and itscurrent research status, the Forward Error Correction technique and its application in opticalnetwork, RS code and its present research situation, and so on. Then it introduced theprinciple of RS code algorithm and the basis of mathematical theory in detail, after that itchose the most suitable algorithm by comparing and analysising the different RS codealgorithm for the design of RScoder in GPON system. In determining the algorithm, itdesigned the hardware structure of the RS codec by using the FPGA technology, then wrote the VerilogHDL code and simulated the code through the Quartus II software. Finally, thispaper designed the parallel RS codec andthe scrambling and descrambling circuit according to the characteristic of GPON system,then it carried out the functional simulation through the Quartus II software and made itporssible to code or scrambling a parallel data with32bit. The design can meet therequirements of data rate in GPON system. In the last, the paper made a summary of theresearch, then pointed out the deficiency of the current research and the direction of furtherresearch.
