Synthesis process of the rare earth doped laser ceramic powders is the prerequisite and key for preparation of the laser ceramics. Currently, the study on preparation and the laser spectral performance about holmium-doped ytterbium gallium garnet(Ho:YbGG) and thulium-doped ytterbium gallium garnet(Tm:YbGG) ceramic powders have not been reported interiorly.In this paper, the Ho:YbGG and Tm:YbGG laser ceramic powders were prepared by low-temperature combustion method and co-precipitation method. It discuss many major influencing factors of the Ho:YbGG and Tm:YbGG laser ceramic powders in the reaction. The optimum preparation conditions of low temperature combustion method for Ho:YbGG and Tm:YbGG powders:the combustion agent is citric acid, the ratio of combustion agent and the metal nitrate is1.5:1, calcined2hours at950℃. The optimum preparation conditions of co-precipitation method:the precipitant is NH3·H2O, pH=7, calcined2hours at1000℃The structure and spectral properties of the powders were analysed by XRD, infrared spectrum, absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, up-conversion fluorescence spectrum and other test means. The results indicated that the strong and broad absorption spectrum of Ho:YbGG and Tm:YbGG laser ceramic powders was found at900nm-1000nm. The fluorescence spectrum of Ho:YbGG and Tm:YbGG were measured, the strongest emitting wavelength of Ho:YbGG and Tm:YbGG were at1990nm and1785nm, correspond to the5I7â†'5I8and3F4â†'3H6transitions. Upconversion fluorescence spectrum of Ho:YbGG and Tm:YbGG laser ceramic powders was measured, and the corresponding upconversion mechanism was analyzed.
