The LD end-pumped high power solid-state lasers leads to a thermal effects which can seriously reduce the performance of the whole laser system, such as decreasing the utilization of electrical energy、making the laser power down and leading the cavity into a unstable state. Electrons are pumped directly to the high energy level by direct pump mode(879nm) which replacing the traditional way of indirectly pumped(808nm).It can reduce the excess heat generated by the non-radiative relaxation process. Thus the thermal effects produced by the Nd:GdVO4crystal is decreased significantly. In this paper Nd:GdVO4crystal is pumped by using879nm and808nm laser diode respectively under the same condition, then we compare their results of the531nm output laser which is generated by through the LBO frequency-doubling crystal. The results show that the laser performance is significantly improved by directly pumped mode(879nm). The final absorption in17.8W pumped power, to get the maximum continuous output power of3.68W of531nm green output, and the light energy conversion efficiency increases to20.67%,the beam quality factor(M2) is1.246.
