In recent years, the receiving array of sonar system is generally composed by a numberof elements, however, it is very difficult to guarantee the phase consistency between the arrayelements. The different phase responses among the acoustic array elements can seriouslydegrade the array signal processing performances. So it appears to be very important tocompensate phase responses of array elements by precise phase estimation. In this paper, a technique for estimating and calibrating the acoustic array phasedifference based on the least-square estimates is described. This technique is effective in theapplication of uniform linear array. Besides, it is very convenient for calibrating the array in asmall pool, without precise location of sound source. In this thesis, firstly, the development of methods is introduced of calibrating theacoustic array phase difference. Secondly, the measuring principles and experimental processof the calibration method are illustrated in detail, based on the least-square estimates. Thirdly, through the simulation, it is proved that this technique can effectively estimate the position ofthe source and the phase of the array elements. And the performance of the MUSICbeamforming algorithm is greatly improved after compensation comparing with theconventional beamforming method, which is not sensitive to the phase differences. Finally, asystem for testing the phase difference is established, realizing collection and storage of arraysignals, computation of the phase consistency between the array elements and analysis of theperformance of the array.
