With the rapid development of the Internet services and applications, the WWW hasstruck root in the hearts of the people and more people have come to use the WWW. But thisdevelopment also bring up various challenges, such as the restriction of IP addresses, thesafety of the web, network flow and web access latency. All of these challenges threaten thesustainable development of the WWW. HTTP proxy server effectively solves the problem andgains wide use in private networks. How to improve the performance of HTTP proxy serverattracts more and more attention as the number of users of private networks and their need ofWWW services grow.An overall discussion about HTTP proxy server is given, including an introduction to thenetwork service model and a systematic investigation on the state-of-the-art techniquesrelating to the dynamic management of memory and Web cache. Based on the disscussion, this thesis focuses on the techniques of the dynamic management of memory and theimprovement of Web cache substitution algorithms relating to high performance HTTP proxyserver. At first multiple common dynamic management techniques are analyzed and theiradvantages and disadvantages are compared. A new approach improving the memory poolbased on the locality principle of programs is proposed to distribute and recycle memory moreeffectively. The research on the properties of Web object access follows. An improvement of theHybrid algorithm based on access distribution and the last used cache is proposed. Theimproved algorithm show substantial promotion in URL hit rate, byte hit rate and accesslatency rate. Finally, a high performance HTTP proxy server is designed and implemented combiningthe improved technique of the dynamic management of memory and cache substitutionalgorithm.
