Video streaming service, as one of the most popular Internet applications, seems tobe another primary killer application to occupy the network bandwidth besides the filedownloading. This serice has experienced a series of development models: C/S, CDN,IP multicast and ALM, etc. With the introduction of peer-to-peer network (P2P), P2Pvideo streaming system has drawn much research attentions and achieved greatdevelopment. It allows the user node in the network to serve as both a client and aserver, so as to improve network bandwidth utilization, the scalability and robustness ofthe system. In P2P video streaming systems, the most popular research and applicationdirection is focused on the mesh-based network. However, recent studies show thatmesh networks based on neighbor relations have certain limitations in searching ofstreaming data. On the other hand, the structured P2P networks with distributed hashtable (DHT) have good performance in data lookup. In particular, compared withmulti-hop DHT, single-hop DHT maximizes query performance in the trade-off betweenquery performance and maintenance overhead. In this thesis, after a review of existing P2P streaming systems and DHTalgorithms, we propose a single hop DHT-based compensation mechanism and a newP2P live streaming system, named ComStream, aiming at improving the quality of userexperience (QoE) in terms of playback continuty. Compared with existing P2P livestreaming systems, ComStream has the following features:1) It exploits the peerheterogeneity and forms a new Mesh-DHT hybrid network architecture. All peers areused to form the Mesh network and share common data, while only super peers are usedto form the DHT network and compensate emergarcy data.2) It takes into accounttime-sensitive properties of the live streaming system to optimize the SDHT frameworkfor efficient single-hop DHT search.3) It contains an efficient compensation mechanismbased on data priority, which ensures the timely retrieving of missing data. Finally, extensive simulation experiements of the prototype system are conducted and numericalresults show that the developed system Comstream provides good guarantee for the playback continuity-based QoE.
