Metamaterial is a kind of artificial period structure, whose permittivity and permeability are simultaneously negative. Due to its unique electromagnetic properties such as negative refraction, doppler effect and reverse cerenkov effect, metamaterial is becoming a hot spot in the academic and applied research, and also promoting the development of microwave devices. In2003, the metamaterial is also considered as one of the top ten Research High Lights by Science Magazine. Along with the rapid development of wireless communication technology, the requirements of metamaterial on the antenna design have become more and more sophisticated, and the current techniques are also more and more difficult to satisfy the requirements of the antenna design. How to apply metamaterial in designing antenna to improve the electrical porperties of the antenna has become an important research direction. The article mainly analyzes the basic theory of metamaterial and its application in the microstrip antenna. Firstly, the basic theory and work principle of the metamaterial are introduced. Then, under the guidance of the theory, we analyze the bandpass effect which produced by designing the transmission line etched complementary split ring resonantor(CSRR) on the ground. Applying this effect on the miniaturization of the microstrip antenna, we design three miniaturized methods by etching different structures on the ground, and they all reach the purposed of antenna miniaturizing; A new type of composite right/left hand transmission line based on coplanar waveguide is proposed. This structure is simple and easy to manufacture, and the study find that it can produce the unique zero-order resonant characteristic of composite right/left hand transmission line; At last, the zero-order resonant antenna and its radiation theory are studied. Applying composite right/left hand transmission line based on coplanar waveguide on the deign of the zero-order resonant antenna, two types of zero-order resonant antennas are designed respectively. The work frequency of these antennas have no business with their sizes, leading to the great reduction of the size of the antenna and achieving the purpose of antenna miniaturizing.
