The intelligent wheelchair is an application of intelligent robot technology and it can provide mobile help to the physical disability crowd. It is the motor-wheelchair that applies the intelligent robot technology, inosculate research in many domains. The intelligent wheelchair combines a number of areas of research, which raises the level of the intelligent wheelchair. It involves several main problems:the architecture of the control system, perception to environment, local path planning, global path planning and the trajectory control.The intelligent wheelchair designed in this paper includes two aspects: context-aware systems and control systems. In the perceptual system, we adopt a variety of sensors, and use the method neural network for information fusion. In order to solve the problem of automatic intelligent wheelchair navigation, in the control system, we adopt the optimal path planning based on the genetic algorithm. In order to avoid the wheelchair collision with the surrounding obstacles in a dynamic environment, we solve this problem using the automatic obstacle avoidance algorithm based on artificial neural network.On the basis of above, we present a new design of intelligent wheelchair. The application of advanced sensor equipment makes it to perceive environmental information and have real-time obstacle avoidance function. The information fusion technology helps us get more accurate information and BP-network realizes real-time obstacle avoidance. In the final experiment, the obstacle avoidance process of intelligent wheelchair is emulated and controlling results are satisfying for wheelchair working in intricate, dynamic, uncertain environment.At last, we discuss the key technology and analyze the development trend of research in the future.
