Coupling feed is an electrically non-contacting feed configuration proposed since1980s,which can be categorized as two topologies: an aperture-coupled feed and aproximity-coupled feed. The coupling feed is very convenient to be adjusted for impedancematching and bandwidth enhancement of antennas. In recent years, coupling feed is becominga popular feeding technique as the growing research of miniaturized and broadband microstripantennas,For different applications of coupling feed, we design two coupling series-feedmicrostrip patch antenna arrays, a broadband omnidirectional horizontally polarized antennaand its array. For applications of coupling parasitic patch, we design a broadband circularlypolarized RFID reader antenna. This thesis includes the following aspects:A brief introduction and comparison of feed configurations is given in Chapter1. Wediscuss the theory of microstrip patch and coupling in Chapter2. A coupling series-feedlinearly polarized microstrip patch antenna array working at5GHz is proposed in Chapter3.The antenna is simulated, fabricated and measured. The prominent characteristic of theantenna is the broad bandwidth and stable radiation pattern. A coupling series-feed circularlypolarized microstrip patch antenna array working at5GHz is proposed in Chapter4. Thesimulation shows a wide impedance bandwidth and axial ratio bandwidth. A broadbandcircularly polarized RFID reader antenna is also developed in this Chapter. An L-shapedground is used to achieve a single layer direct-feed and a parasitic rectangular patch near themain corner-truncated square patch is introduced to enhance the bandwidth of proposedantenna. A broadband omnidirectional horizontally polarized antenna and its array is proposedin Chapter5with a microstripline-slot coupling structure. The antenna is simulated andmeasured in1.7-2.2GHz which covers the GSM/PCS/UMTS band. Both of the antennaelement and its array have good omnidirectivity.
