Computer-aided craniofacial rehabilitation, which uses the techniques of computer graphics, biomedicine, anthropology and artificial intelligence, is a technology that recovery the3D face models based on its unknown skull. The recovery3D face models have no realistic effects as the3D face models which generated by craniofacial recovery technology lack corresponding skin, eyes and eyebrow texture data. Texture synthesis technologies are proposed to realize the realistic effects of3D human face, which have an important theoretical and practical value. Its content mainly includes:(1) A novel method, which is based on Wang Tiles technology, is proposed. Wang Tiles are constructed from four texture samples and ready for matching other Tiles. Wang Tiles is a real-time way to generate textures because they are pre-computed. However, the matching problems occur within Tiles and at the corners of adjacent Tiles. The problem is solved by the novel method which uses irregular patches, a random overlapping method and an optimal matching algorithm. The human skin texture, which could be any size, is synthesized in a real-time way by this novel technology and good results are gained.(2) The techniques of texture synthesis over arbitrary manifold surfaces are also studied. Because the local organ texture on the face is different from each other, the technique of texture synthesis is used on the wide area of the face surface which has the similar texture. A classification criterion is proposed for eyes by their shapes, and then the most similar textures corresponding to local organ models are chosen by the classification. Texture mapping algorithm is used for eyes regions, and texture synthesis technology is used for lips and eyebrows. The realistic result of the whole face is got in the end.(3) The realistic3D human face processing system, which is based on local organs method involved in this paper, is developed by Visual C++6.0and OpenGL3D graphics library for the virtual operation. The realistic effect of3D human face model could be got easily by the simple mouse click.This research is supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (60736008).
