With the rapid development of science and technology, people’s requirements of computer network resource increase dramatically, and the issue of information security has become increasingly severe. Hierarchical access control is one of the most significant security mechanisms for information system. It has broad development prospect and is widely used in businesses, government and military and so on. Key management is the core of hierarchical access control, so this paper makes an intensive study of key management for hierarchical access control and its application.First of all, this paper gives a brief introduction of the basic knowledge of hierarchical access control, introduces three typical schemes and compares them, and points out their advantages and disadvantages. Then, a key management scheme of hierarchical access control based on identity is presented, and the algorithms of key generation, key derivation and key update are described in detail. At the same time, this paper analyzes the scheme from the aspects of security, time complexity and space complexity. Smart Grid is the inevitable choice for China’s electric power industry. The Smart Distribution Grid is the most complex part of Smart Grid, and the information security of Smart Distribution Grid largely determines the security of Smart Grid. Therefore, this paper gives a brief introduction of the Smart Distribution Grid, and points out its information security issues. Meanwhile, IEEE34-node feeder power system is used to illustrate the application of hierarchical access control in the Smart Distribution Grid. Finally, the proposed scheme is simulated and analyzed. The result proves that the security and efficiency of the proposed scheme are very high and the scheme proposed meets the requirements of secure communication in the Smart Distribution Grid.
