With the development of computer techonology,people are looking forward to the both increasingly photorealistic and fast images.As one of research focus,terrain rendering related technologies are widely used in flight simulator,military simulation,scientific visualization and3D GIS.Because of advancement of data collection technology,the collection of massive and highly precise trrain data has become prevalent,so as for how to generate images which can be used for interactive roaming has been still a question for researchers all over the world.In this paper,we have researched the terrain rendering-related acceleration methods as follows:(1)Firstly,we have had a brief introduction to the current progress of terrain rendering.Secondly, we have discussed the fundmental data-DEM.Thirdly,we have summarized the related graphical ransformations.Lastly, we have introduced widely used graphical interface-OpenGL.(2)We have continued to do research into various rendering methods provided by OpenGL on the basis of previous research achievements.So the innovations we have obtained are as follows:By generating triangle strip,the rendering performance can be improved effectively.The VBO has been used in combination with the development of OpenGL.GPU-based lighting and texture mapping are used in our method which are different from the fixed rendering pipline of predeccessors’.(3)ROAM has been researched in a detail.On the basis of it, the innovations we have obtained are as follows:the pacth-based Roam has been presented which can be used in terrain rendering under the circumstance of out-of-core.Furthmore, height varience has been combined with triangle varience in tiangle subdivision. In order to keep stable frame rate,frame varience has been used;Furthermore, view frustum has been simplified which ran in the base of patch.
