The main features of the traveling wave tube are high power, high efficiency, wide bandwidth and long life. As the core component of the microwave power amplification devices, it widely used in radar, electronic warfare weapons and communication devices. In addition, it plays an important role in defense and civilian equipment. The electron gun is used to generate and transmit the electron beam, its performance parameters will directly affect the traveling-wave tube’s main index, such as, the gain, the efficiency, the life and so on. Consequently, the design of the electron gun plays an important role in the design of the whole wave tube. The design and manufacture of the electron gun related to the electromagnetic theory, strong current electron optics, machinery and materials, its theories and manufacturing processes are very sophisticated. With the development of the computer technology, the microwave CAD simulation software based on the theory of the vacuum electron optics has appeared, it can shorten the design cycle, save the experimental cost and raise the capability of the design of the electron gun.Currently, the widely used design method of the electron gun is:according to the index, we can calculate the initial value of the electron gun structure, then use the CAD software to establish the initial model and simulate, finally observe the differences between the simulation results and the design indicators. We need adjust the dimension to simulate until the differences are disappeared. By this processes, we can know how to get the accurate initial value of the electron gun structure, the working theory of the simulation software and the accuracy, how to judge the performance of electron beam, and how to adjust to get the ideal simulation results faster and better.All of these issues are very important, the author is just researching these issues.The paper is mainly optimizing the design of the electron gun of the traveling wave tube. It involves:firstly, comparing the calculation results of the UESTC-GUN and the MTSS software with the other same type software’s results, the experimental results and the results of the Strong Current Electronic Gun Collection; secondly, summarizing the existed designing initial value’s method of the electron gun, and the more versatile calculation method; thirdly, discussing the electron beam laminar flow, get a method of intuitive and can quantitatively distinguish the quality of the electron layer flow; finally, by calculating the initial value and using the simulation software MTSS to get two electron gun that conforming the design index. The summaries of the design parameters and the designing processes of the electron gun offer some referenced value for the design work of the traveling wave tube’s electron gun.
