With the development of vacuum electronic technology, the requirement for the performance of Traveling-Wave Tube (TWT) from military electronic industry and commercial use becomes much higher. TWT plays an important role as high power and wide band microwave generator and microwave amplifier. The higher requirement for TWT is also being promoted by modern satellite communication, space communication, phase array radar and etc., from the aspect of smaller size, long age, higher reliability and so on.Traveling wave tube has the characters of high plus, wide frequency, longevity and high reliability, so TWT is the core apparatus of communication, radar and electron antagonizing. TWT play very important role in modern high-tech war. Up to now, there is no other apparatus can substitute it. Electron gun is an important part of TWT, it can produce electron beam with a certain shape and current, in order to guarantee the reliability and security of TWT, the design of electron gun have to meet to the requirement not only of electric parameter, but also all kinds of subsidiary characteristics such as filament pyrogenation efficiency, warm up time and the ability to be able to bear the press. Therefore the research of electron gun of TWT is very important.The manufacture process of TWT involve many kinds of subjects, such as microwave electronics, electron optics, electromagnetic fields theory, material science, cathode elecronics, mechanics and calorifics. With developments and applications of computers, the technologies on TWT have been greatly improved. In the paper, we use ORION software to simulate and design the electron gun of TWT, this software is simple to manipulate and can provide enough precision. Therefore, it is a convenient tool for TWT designer, giving them more design efficiency and saving cost. The structural design is an important step for the electron gun, it is useful to improve the reliability of TWT. Basic requirements on the structural design of electron gun are presented in this paper. Based on the principal of gridded gun and the requirement of TWT, the design of a nonintercepting gridded gun is given in the paper. The design results show that the laminarity of millimeter-wave TWT is easily affected both by the shape of the electrodes and the fabrication-errors. At last, we use ORION software to simulate and design the grided electron gun and non grided electron gun, the result not only has attained the goal of the design but also has some practical value.
