With the rapid development of modern wireless communication technology, the antenna as the terminal of communication system requires higher performance. Microstrip antenna which has thin profile、suitable for conformal、low fabrication cost and other advantages compared to the conventional microwave antennas, is widely used in engineering application.EBG structure is periodic structure which has band-stop frequency, and it is a kind of the metamaterial which has unique electromagnetic properties. The antenna based on EBG has received extensive attention from scholars. The basic theory of the EBG structure is introduced in this thesis, and the loading effect of EBG is researched. The miniature antenna taking advantage of this effect is designed. Specific content includes followings:Firstly, The EBG’s electromagnetic characteristics and the method of analysis are introduced, then the mechanism of the frequency band gap and the in-phase reflection characteristics are also introduced. The software simulation method and the practical antenna design applications are discussed.Secondly, the theory and design method of microstrip antenna are introduced, and a circularly polarized antenna worked in2492MHz is designed. Direct transmission method is used to research the effect of EBG loading. The effective constitutive electromagnetic parameters are retrieved through the traditional s-parameter retrieval method. The feasibility of designing a miniature microstrip antenna based on EBG is discussed. A miniature EBG-loaded microstrip antenna is designed, and the results of simulation and experimental are proposed.Finally, the design method of ultra-wideband antenna is described, and a ultra-wideband antenna example is designed. Band-rejection filter based on the EBG structure is researched, and the miniaturization EBG units are used to design band-rejection filters for WiMAX and WLAN. The ultra-wideband antenna with two band- rejection are designed, and the simulation and experimental results are discussed.
