The development of optical fiber communication technology requires greater transmission capacity and speed. However, it must make an optical-electrical-optical conversion on the node in the current technology. The only way to solve the problem is to establish all-optical network. We all know that the optical switch is an important device of the all-optical communication systems. The most potential one is optically controlled optical switch. The optically controlled optical switch based on SOA has so many advantages, such as greater speed of response, lower loss, and smaller size. In recent years, all-optical switch developed rapidly. The paper has presented an optically controlled optical switch based on nonlinear polarization rotation in SOA and used Poincare sphere and experiment to analyze this system.First of all, the paper defined the Jones vector and the Stokes vector. The paper used principal state of polarization (PSP) model to get the input optical polarization’variable in the Poincare sphere, and finally deduced contact between the output light polarization and the power of control light, the current and the power of signal light. The nonlinear polarization rotation phenomenon is proved in this paper. The deflection of linear polarizer between V and H is achieved. The optimal experimental parameters of power of control light, current and power of signal light are given out by experiment. The theory of optical switch based on the SOA nonlinear polarization rotation has been verified. The experimental model presented in this paper made an important contribution to further research about high speed optically controlled optical switch based on SOA.
