As the wireless communication is rapidly developing, the users of wireless communication service are becoming more and more, and people are paying more attention on the quality of the communication. The base station plays a very important role in wireless communication, which has the direct impact on the network communication quality. As an important part of the base station, base station power amplifier has the vital influence on the performance of the base station. Its output power decides the distance of communication and the size of the area effectively covering. Its efficiency affects consumption level and using time of the battery, at the same time it need to meet some requirements in gain, linearity, the size of the practical circuit and so on. In addition, the base station power amplifier is demanded working at high frequency and outputting larger power, which is very different with the amplifier working at small signal state. Therefore, designing a base station power amplifier with good performance has a very practical and important significance. In this article we chooses two LDMOS transistors from MOTOROLA company, using a simulation software called ADS from Agilent, to design a kind of two stage base station power amplifier meeting requirements of the performance. Firstly the stability of the amplifier are analyzed, and then we design and optimize the impedance matching of amplifier using load-pull method and Smith circle diagram, and finally we do the analysis on the simulation to the whole amplifier parameters. The main contents of this article are as follows:1. Introducing the theory basis of radio frequency amplifier. At first give out the structure model for LDMOS transistors, analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the base station power amplifier which is designed using the LDMOS transistors. And then learn knowledge about transmission line which is needed when designing power amplifier, including general equation for transmission line, microstrip transmission line and S parameter. Finally talk about stability analysis and method of impedance matching for power amplifier.2. Detailedly discussing theoretical basis of the RF power amplifier. Firstly introduce the main parameters and working status of the power amplifier, and then focus on the impedance matching and Load-pull method used in this paper, then simply discuss the modern technology for radio frequency, finally present the general design steps on designing power amplifier.3. Working out a base station power amplifier with good performance, and each of main parameters is simulated optimized, finally we put forward some problems which should pay attention to and some solutions when designing the RF power amplifier.
