As a new generation of coding standard, H.264 has fully inherited the advantages of the previous standards. On the other hand, it has introduced a variety of advanced coding techniques in order to realize the high efficiency encoding and high quality decoding of a system. The high compression rate and high-quality performance makes it suitable for network video transmission related fields. Nowadays, H.264 has alreadying been used in areas such as streaming media transport, digital television, video conference, video on demand and video communication.Based on the author’s experience on H.264 high definition video codec projects during the internship in Beijing VORX Communication Technology Co Ltd, this paper designs and realizes the H.264-based high definition video communication system. Working of this paper is listed as below:Firstly, this paper has made a study of H.264 video encoding standard from its development, application to its main technology characters, then described the meaning and application prospect of developing a H.264-based high definition video communication system. This is the theoretical basis of this paper. Secondly, described the technologies involved in the whole process of video communication system from video capture, video encoding, network transmission, video decoding to video display, including DirectShow, X264, RTP, FFMPEG, DirectDraw, all of which are irrelevant to each other. Then complete the implementation of the entire video communication system by using these technologies.Thirdly, this paper has recorded some of the faults in detail, which occurred during the test and use of this system, then made an in-depth investigation of these defeats, given the specific and feasible sulutions. This improved system is easy to operate as well as stable in using, thus has got a high pratical value.
