In response to the challenges of wireless broadband access technology and meetting the future demand for broadband services, the mainstream wireless communication systems are seek solutions to the evolution of next generation mobile communication systems. The basic objective of evolution is to achieve higher data rates, shorter delays and lower costs, higher system capacity and improved coverage.Orthogonal frequency division multiple (OFDM) is adopted to be the most appropriate air-interface technology for the next-generation wireless communications due to its high spectral efficiency and inherent robustness against frequency-selective fading. On the other hand, the multi-hop relaying concept is introduced to traditional cellular infrastructures to provide ubiquitous high data rate coverage. When these two promising technologies are combined together, the intelligent resource radio resource management (RRM) schemes (such as handoff, scheduling, resource distribution, intra/inter cell routing, feedback overhead, power controlling) becomes more crucial to harness the opportunities and challenges in such future OFDMA-based cellular relay network. It is therefore the research emphasis of this thesis to investigate the packet scheduling algorithms for the next-generation wireless communications.OFDM and relay are introduced as the two key technologies in the next-generation wireless communications. Then, this thesis reviews some of the opportunities and challenges associated with the migration from conventional cellular architecture to relay-enhanced networks from a radio resource management perspective. Several typical scheduling algorithms are migrated from single-hop networks to multi-hop networks. For the purpose of energy saving, an energy saving scheduling algorithm is proposed based on traditional Proportional Fair (PF) scheduling algorithm. During recent years, micro-economical concepts have been adopted to analyse radio resource management for wireless communication systems. The application of utility and price in the packet scheduling scheme are reseached in this thesis. Users’probability of to be scheduled are effected by both users" service satisfaction and price paid. Beside, the simulation platform for OFDMA-based multi-hop relay network is built up over matlab to compare the algorithms’performance. The simulations results show that the scheduling scheme proposed in this thesis reduce the system energy consum while improve the system total throughput and the users’quality of service (QoS).
