There are more than50years from the1960s LED started to enter the market to the present. LED attracted the world’s attention by its long life, no radiation, low power consumption and other advantages. With the progress and development of semiconductor lighting technology, LED has become the priority choice for lighting applications. In the more widely used, people usually combination single LED into an LED surface light source. Generally, LED surface light source needed to be designed and planned before it been manufactured. One of the important purposes is to produce LED surface light source with good uniform illumination, so the uniform design for the LED surface light source is particularly important.It’s combined the basis of light source design, approximated the LED as a point source, used source property generator to simulate LED optical properties. According to the lighting design theory, designed the LED surface light source in the optical simulation software. The principle of light-emitting and the characteristics of LED was system described in this paper. Different production methods of the white LED were compared. Development trend of LED in the lighting filed was in-depth analyzed. The design method of light source was studied, which used the LED array’s principle of luminous. The paper studies the optical properties of the LED, Analyses the various factors that affect the uniformity of the LED surface light source, simulates LED arrays to study the characteristics. Finally, according to the LED optical characteristics and influencing factors, a uniform LED surface light source can be designed, which can make the distribution of lighting to get the irradiated surface is uniform.
