Measurement is an important means for human understanding the worldand exploring nature, and it is also crucialfor construction and scientific research. The accuracy of measurement has a significant impact on national economy and security by affecting the quality of engineering and scientific research. TheTotal Station has found wide applications as an importantmeasuring instrument. The ability of mapping depends on the technical level of the measuring instruments. Productionquality is decided by the accuracy of the measuring instrument in mapping work. In order to obtaining high-precision measured data, we must analyze the instrumental error and then verify the results obtained. Because of the imperfection of the present method and technology, results obtained are always with error and uncertainty. Theobjective of studying error and uncertainty is to master the error law correctly and then process and compare measurement properly. The thesis aims at the study of the above problems:Firstly, this paper analyzed the reasons which may cause errors, and proposes the model of the ranging error.Secondly, wecalculated the additive constant and multiplication constant of the model with least square method.Thirdly, this paperevaluated the uncertainty of measurement by standard deviation, grey system theory and fuzzy method, and then analyzed characteristicsof three different methodsto obtain reliable results.Then.weanalyzedandregulated the collimation axis error, and the uncertainty of angle measurement. At last, werealized a communication between Total Station and PDA.And the last work is todesign the traverse surveyprocedureprogrambase on VC++.
