Based on idealized reader framework (IRF) proposed by O’Halloran, this paper endeavors to improve the structure of IRF, to re-interpret or re-define some key notions and to clarify the relation of basic theories. Furthermore, a hard news text is analyzed under the revised framework, in order to prove validity of the new framework. Firstly, this thesis tries to amend the interpretation of mystification analysis and to re-locate socio-cognitive analysis within IRF by comparative analysis and document research. As a result, the structure of IRF becomes more comprehensive and accurate. Secondly, several important notions, such as idealized reader, hard news, paradigm and so on, are explained or re-defined through document research, so as to make these concepts with more comprehensive and correct interpretation. Thirdly, this paper narrows the range of the discussion when giving a general introduction to basic theories of IRF. At the same time, this paper attempts to introduce connectionism, conceptual category, inference generation and relevance theory more specifically by combining other relative works. Fourthly, with regard to the relation of the four paradigms, compatibility of these theories which have not been discussed by O’Halloran is added. Furthermore, this thesis endeavors to illustrate the relation with a figure. In addition,18 information processing principles, generalized from the four paradigms, are divided into 6 items in accordance to the relation of the four paradigms and internal demands for IRF. Principles which have been revised are hoped to be grasped and be used easily. Finally, a hard news text is analyzed within the amended framework. The case study aims to testify the improved framework to be more valid and more convenient to be operated. This text is analyzed through the background, the title, superordinate goal & subordinate goal, main character & secondary character, casual antecedent inference & causal consequent inference, instantiation & instrument inference.
