Semantic Web is conducive to achieve machine understanding of information in addition to promote the automation of information processing, which is destined to make the Semantic Web rightly be concerned. However, with the development of the network, the information on the internet is exponentially level increased. Moreover, due to the limitations of human understanding of the world, it is lead to that the knowledge be understood incompletely, which is bound to affect the information and knowledge-based reasoning. The knowledge in the Semantic Web is ontology because of its excellent structure describing the resource. The incomplete knowledge reasoning for information is an integral part of the Semantic Web applications, and the ontology inference engine which can effectively deal with the incomplete information is needed. So, the default reasoning and ontological inheritance mechanism are studied in this thesis, and some results are yielded.Currently, there are a series of ontology reasoning mechanisms, but most of them cannot solve the problem of reasoning in the case of default information. The study of ontology is limited to complete ontology, and assume that the information for reasoning is the whole case. However, in the reasoning of knowledge, knowledge also showed the characteristics of incomplete. The ontology is also a kind of knowledge, and therefore also incomplete.Firstly, the default reasoning which is represented by non-monotonic reasoning can be good for the incomplete knowledge. In this thesis, the characteristics of default reasoning are deeply studied, and the way that default reasoning theory is applied is been looking for.Secondly, the essence of mechanism of ontology inheritance is explored. Default reasoning is applied in the mechanism of ontology inheritance, and the new ontology inheritance mechanism is achieved. Then, the inheritance relationship in the ontology is weakened.Finally, in order to test and verify the effect of the weakened ontology inheritance, the characteristics of default are studied, and the concept and expression and reasoning mechanism of incomplete ontology are proposed through the default. So the ontology reasoning is non-monotonic and is closer to the reasoning characteristic of the human brain. The approach for handling of missing information is brought. And then, the validity of the inference mechanism is verified using an example, and the value of the weakened ontology inheritance mechanism. A reasoning system that supports default reasoning is designed and developed to experimentally evaluate the method.
