Wireless mesh networks is a broadband wireless network which has characterizesof self-organization, self-configuration, multi-hop. It is a new type of network which isdifferent from cellular networks and wireless local area networks as the wirelessnetwork develops. The key technologies of wireless mesh networks are in physical layer,data link layer and network layer. During designing wireless mesh networks, not onlywireless transmission needs to be considered, but also the protocol of every layer andthe relationship of service and be serviced between the upper layer and the underlyingprotocol. Thus, it is very difficult.The link quality of wireless mesh networks is easily interfered by Near wirelesslink, then the throughput will be affected, so it is the key problem to provide the highperformance routing protocol. Currently, the line of research is mainly anglicizing andtaking example by classic routing protocol of other wireless networks, e.g. wireless adhoc networks, then combining the characterizes of wireless mesh networks, so thatproposing a running well routing protocol in wireless mesh networks. Based on this line,the routing of wireless mesh networks is researched in this paper, the mainly content ofthis paper as follow:①Introduction of the architecture characterizes and advantages of wireless meshnetworks, the standardizations of wireless mesh networks and the differences of thesestandardizations, the differences of wireless mesh networks and other wirelessmulti-hop networks, the key technology of wireless mesh networks and the applicationsof wireless mesh networks. According to the development of the network, we introducethe routing protocols of internet and wireless ad hoc networks, and present theadvantages and disadvantages of the routing protocol and their application scenarios.And then, we analysis the key points, research status and the designing ideas of wirelessmesh networks.②Based on the national program "863", we analysis the non-stationary of thewireless mesh networks links under large scale burst interference. Upon the hierarchicalregular wireless mesh networks topology, we propose mixed routing protocol VHHR(Virtual Hierarchical Hybrid Routing). The links of network are divided by the stabilityindex into reliable plane and unreliable plane. In the reliable plane, the data packets areforwarding by link state routing protocol, in another plane, they are forwarding by the angle routing. During the forwarding in the reliable plane, if the node detects that thevalue of link quality drops to an unacceptable threshold, the packets will be forwardingby the angle protocol in the unreliable plane. When the quality of link goes back to anacceptable threshold, it is switched back to link state routing protocol. Through thesimulation analysis, the hybrid routing protocol inhibited the impact of the wirelessinterference in a certain degree in data link layer and network layer.
