Reading, a vital approach to improving one’s culture attainment and aesthetic ability, haslong been deemed as a fundamental subject in the study of the Chinese language teaching. However, there have been few reading teaching studies on popular literary works which are themajor contents of the after-class reading materials for senior high students.Based on a wide range of documentary sources collected in recent years, the essayanalyses the current state of popular literature reading among senior high students in the urbanarea of Qingdao city by case study and questionnaire method. It aims to provide a scientificbasis for the creation of the guiding principles and teaching strategies for reading class inaccordance with the reality of the students. The popular literary works read by senior high students are mainly bought frombookstores or downloaded from the Internet. By contrast, they seldom borrow books fromschool libraries or public ones. Their choices of reading materials are usually influenced bytheir peers or the media. Generally speaking, most senior high students prefer to read popularnovels or prose. In the course of reading, just part of the students can tell the pros and cons ofthose materials. What’s worse, most of them have no specific reading plans. More often thannot, they just read a few pages from time to time and seldom stick to reading on a regular basis.More than half of the students haven’t developed any proper reading habit or lack a clearpurpose for reading, which shows the reading habits among senior high students are ratherdisappointing. Both the students and their parents hope that the Chinese teachers can direct thestudents to enjoy the popular literature in a scientific way. As a matter of fact, most parents andChinese teachers disapprove of the popular literature reading among students, fearing that theymay easily get addicted and do badly in their studies. This will inevitably leads to the conflictsbetween parents and their children. In reality, they seldom communicate with each other on thisissue and most parents and teachers fail to fulfill their part as a qualified guide and copartner interms of the popular literature reading. Due to the influence of varied factors, neither parentsnor teachers can spare enough time each day to do some reading. Besides, the number of booksin each family leaves much to be desired, leading to the fact that parents can’t set a goodexample for their children when it comes to reading. In summary, the time that can be used for students to read each day is very limited. Due tothe lack of available reading materials and poor reading habits, most students are in badly needof appropriate guidance and help. However, many parents and Chinese teachers have no ideahow to give them the correct guidance through their reading practice. Since popular literature isthe main reading content for senior high students, the Chinese teachers might as well carefullystudy and make the most of these materials rather than prohibit students from reading them.More efforts should be made to diminish the bad influence of the popular literary works andturn them into the effective resources for students to improve their reading abilities. Therefore, through making an analysis of this state, the author employed the expectationvision theory and constructivist learning theory to expound the principles and strategies forsenior high reading classes, thereby finding an effective way to improve the students’ readingability and enhance their aesthetic taste in practice. In the meantime, the study is conducted onthe principles of optimization, subjectivity, creativity, reflexivity and guidanciality, combinedwith the actual situation of the reading teaching in senior high schools. In spite of the fact that most students do the reading after class, we can never shut our eyeto the improper reading habits among students. Instead, their reading process needs to becorrectly evaluated so as to help the students achieve an overall improvement in their languageabilities. Therefore, a more effective evaluation strategy must be employed in the process ofreading teaching to enhance students’ reading ability and aesthetic taste. The essay consists of four major parts. The preface explains the significance of the thesisand introduces the present situation and trend in and out China concerning this subject. Inchapter one, through analyzing the questionnaire, the author elaborates the classification andcharacteristics of popular literature reading among senior high students as well as its influenceon them. Chapter two is about the definition of “popular literature” and “reading” andillustrates the application of the expectation vision theory and constructivist learning theory inpopular literature reading. In chapter three, the guiding principles and teaching strategies forreading class in senior high school are mainly researched. Meanwhile, the author also putsforward the evaluation system and suggests the problems that may come along.
