Nowadays the problems in English reading teaching are more and moreincreasing although there are many requirements in the Standard NewCurriculum and English Teaching Syllabus. Therefore, the situation is notoptimistic in the Second Middle School in Baiqi, Ximeng because manystudents’ reading abilities are in the stagnation, even going backwards. It isevery teacher’s mission to solve this problem. Teachers play an important rolein teaching so the author will investigate the problems about teachers’ readingteaching. On the basis of the approaches of questionnaire, classroomobservation and interviews this paper analyzes these points such as theguidance of reading methods and strategies, the correction of bad readinghabits, teaching stress, teachers’ teaching and researching and teachers’understanding on English reading. Meanwhile, according to students thispaper also discusses the application of reading theories and teachers’ readingteaching frequency, teaching strategies and reading time in classroom. Thenthe paper finds several problems as follows: poor teachers’ teaching ability,difficulties in changing teaching philosophy, stressing on textbook readingmaterial while ignoring the integration of curriculum resources, inadequateguidance on reading methods and strategies, not correcting students’ badreading habits, lack of the introduction of English cultural background knowledge, monotonous teaching patter and inflexible evaluation manner. Inthe end, this paper also gives the corresponding solutions to these problemsmentioned above such as improving teachers’ abilities, cultivating students’good reading habits, strengthening on the guidance of reading strategies andskills, changing teaching philosophy and optimizing teaching mode,emphasizing the accumulation of cultural knowledge and stressing thelearning process and improving evaluation.
