As one of the essential parts of the P.E. education in China, martial arthas been playing the role of maintaining and developing the Chinesetraditional sports spirits and cultures. However, it’s not easy work. Aseries of reforms have been carried on, like “simplifying styles and makingit more practical”,“developing the traditional cultures” and so on.Yet, it still puts martial arts into the situation of a dilemma.Taking Beijing for an example, we selected five junior high school andfive primary school and did a survey among them as well as individualinterviews about the martial arts courses. Here are the results:1. It’s inefficient to deliver martial arts cultures simply by the courses.Students aren’t interested in the courses. They even don’t know the basicetiquettes of martial arts.2. The courses are inadequate in schools. They emphasize much more onacademic education and martial arts courses.3. There is also a shortage of professional martial arts teachers and thefurther education courses for the teachers. They don’t really enjoy givingmartial arts courses.4. The martial arts courses are lack of a connection with and martial artscultures, which is very likely to get students bored.5. Students are strongly influenced by the new media, like TV, movies andInternet. Yet, martial arts spirits are not delivered positively, at least, not accurately enough.Suggestions: Connect martial arts more with its cultures; attract thepassion and interest of students; pay attention to the education of martialarts etiquettes and spirits; broaden the teaching resources and use moreflexible teaching methods; willing to interact with students and make coursesmore relaxing; focus on the use of martial arts skills.
