The issue of mathematical learning difficulties is always paid close attention to by a great many educators. Experts and researchers from different countries have done a lot of research into the cause of difficulties in learning mathematics, and meanwhile they have put forward many valuable proposes. But the students who have difficulty in maths have not made rapid progress. Meta-cognition Theory was first proposed by American famous psychologist Flavell J.H. in the70s of20th century. For more than30years, many psychologists have been engaged in research on the theory and gained a series of achievements. It is verified that the meta-cognitive ability is a crucial factor affecting students learning and performance. And in guiding students how to study, it is of important realistic significance. Therefore, based on Meta-cognition Theory, the paper has done research about the cause of senior middle school students with mathematical learning difficulties. It is hoped that the research can provide some references for a great many educational workers.The paper chose40students who had difficulty in learning mathematics from one senior Middle School in Shandong Province as the research subjects and did a survey about the meta-cognition levels of them through the questionnaire investigation and interview. The survey showed that the meta-cognition levels of students with mathematics problems are low, which is a main factor that affects learning effect. Based on Meta-cognition Theory, the reasons why students have trouble in mathematics are that they lack self-confidence of mathematics study, and they have not solid mathcmatic base. Many students cannot nimbly use different methods to solve mathematical problems. Also, they are lack of self-awareness and essential success. Lots of students don’t make a plan for study and evaluate themselves correctly, and meanwhile they cannot actively construct their knowledge structure. Many students show little interested in studies. Besides, excessive homework and ignoring students with mathematical problems are among the main reasons. In order to raise the meta-cognition abilities and improve learning effects, a few suggestions are supplied. Teachers should help students learn and master the basic knowledge of Meta-cognition Theory and give more opportunities for students to go through meta-cognitive experience in mathematics teaching. And teachers ought to guide students to construct the knowledge network of mathematics, which can motivate students form a good cognitive structure. Also teachers should instruct students to make study plans and cultivate the habits of self evaluation and self reflection.
