Learning of culture is an essential part of language learning and key to the cultivationof students’ comprehensive qualities. The social development and economic constructionof China today set higher standards of foreign language ability for Chinese people. Foreignlanguage education in high school means tremendously in either humanity development orsocial development. The Curriculum Standards specifies that it’s important to pay attentionto students’ emotions and improve their humanely awareness. Among a bunch of differentversions of high school textbooks, the author selects NSEC (short for New Senior Englishfor China, published by People’s Education Press) and NSE (short for New StandardEnglish, published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press) for analysis andresearch due to their popularity and wide use. The comparative research will be carried outbased on the topics of NSEC and NSE. Firstly, the thesis will make statements about therelationships between language, culture and language learning, through which thecloseness between them since ever shall be uncovered. At the same time the necessity ofcontact with culture during language learning shall be proved. Secondly, the CurriculumStandards for High School English Education will be interpreted to provide theoreticalsupport and direction to later research. The thesis revolves around the research of topics inthe following aspects: comparison of topic range and structural features, comparison ofinternationality, comparison of spiritual implications to the students, relation to the timesand notes to the texts. Some aspects of research may branch out into some subsidiary fieldsfor more accurate and detailed studies. During the research, tables will be created toillustrate the quantitative difference between the textbooks. At the end of the thesis, theauthor will make comments on the reasonability and defects of the textbooks and offersome suggestions.
