Western painting teams of the Art Major of the Education Department of National Central University has reflected the art education thought with the gist of realism. The specific teaching requirement is to cultivate students’accurate observation of the objective image and the actual performance ability, to grasp the main aspects of the object from the general view while paying attention to the details, and avoid formalism. Especially in the basic course teaching, it attaches great importance to the sketch by adopting the combination of painting and copying. It also pays attention to the objective laws and performance rules, training students’ abilities in solid realistic modeling and thematic painting creation. In this process, the art teaching thought of Xu Beihong plays a dominant role. The teaching norms and teaching concepts of western painting group, not only meet the overall requirements of higher education in China, but also have significant impact on the standardization of modern Chinese art education.Based on teaching practices in western painting teams of the Art Major of the Education Department of National Central University from1928to1937, this paper mainly discusses the teaching ideas and basic training models, as well as teaching goals and overall requirements for students’knowledge structure. It elucidates the integrity and scientificity of this teaching method, and lays stress on its standardization and comprehensiveness. At last, focusing on the follow-up art development of the graduates from Western painting teams of the Art Major of the Education Department of National Central University, it carries out rethinking of the malleability and inclusiveness of the art education concept of Xu Beihong. With "self-reliance and cultivating person", and from the aspect of the derivation and diffusion of a system and the aspect of the thematic creation of two stages in modern society, it attaches importance to the influence as well as the historical position of this teaching system in the development of modern Chinese art.
