Campus Upheaval And Politics: A Case Study On "the Movement Of School-protecting" Of National Chung Cheng University In1947

The campus upheaval (student movement) involves many aspects of modern Chinese society and politics.The National Chung Cheng University encountered unprecedented crisis in education in1947,which triggered a student riot.Thereafter,in order to save the crisis the organization named "school-protecting movement meeting" setted up immediately.In the organization’s leadership,students launched strike,petition,negotiation and other activities.What’s more,they demanded the dismissal of the president and planned to go to the capital Nanjing for demonstration. All of that,which led to the interference of the local government.It was not appeased until the president had resigned,and it has lasted for more than three months.This paper selects "the movement of school-protecting" of National Chung Cheng University in1947as a researching case, puts perspective on one National university which located at the central region,discusses among the elements around campus upheaval,draws arguments bottomed on historical facts and discusses something about the society and politic during the period of the war of liberation in China."Students unrest is the schools’ internal unrest,which reflects the educational problems".Therefor,the author always can’t neglect how about the school when the student strike occurred,which may include people (students,teachers,president), business(actual operation,the staff and students get along) and matter (buildings,books,laboratory instruments and other equipment). For text layout and narrative,the author discuss its internal situation from the flowing aspects, as running condition,student groups,school administration.What’s more,the development of the school can be took for background to explain. The study found that the university was deeply immersed the crisis in education,which performed like as its foundation was weak,the lack of the ability of respond,the lack of teachers,books,laboratory instruments and other equipment; staff and students living depress,the student thought gradient, student organizations were active;school administration was not satisfactory and the president was misunder stood. In short words, there were the subjective and objective conditions supporting the outbreak of student strike that it was unable to save itself because of the bad times.The strike lasted more than three month,but what can be called "movement" is merely that two or three hundred students attacked on the president XIAO qu on February28th and the violent clash between the students in the parade and the gendarme,police,guard who were dispatched beforehand by the provincial government happened in the Chung Cheng bridge on May21th.Besides,the strike was classroom boycott,"anti-mediation" and other activities under the leadership of the school-protecting organization. It could be easily found that the motivation of the strike was pure,the students involved in spontaneous and they were influenced by the trend of the domestic student strike,the destination was attempt to save the crisis in education through combining the historical facts.According to the nature and the evolution process of the strike,the governments’ coping strategies were vary and the social people from all walks of life paid attention to it or involved on their own initiative.As a result of multiple factors,the central government,local government and the elite in traditional society conducted some fragments together in the different stage of the student demonstrations,such as the leading role in transposition,the diversities between the central and the local and the utility were different. Seeing about the mediation of the local government on the student strike from the microscopic aspect,its politic structure can be found which was buildup by KMT Provincial Headquarters,the Department of the three-principle Youth League,Provincial senate and the Province Government.In addition,its internal situation and operating mechanism can also be exposed.If from a "long time "to see about the student strike,there still has harvest that the strike had important influence on the trend of the university in future.In other words,to some extend that it is due to its side effects,LIN Yi min who was not only educator but also politician was the new president and parties involved,which determines the trend of the next phase.
