Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is the new trend in the development of English teaching, which focuses on guiding student learning language by means of computers. Its purpose is to get the best learning effects through the utilization of teaching process, teaching contents, and computer assisting. In recent years, the research and practice into CALL pay more attention to regular institutions of higher learning. But as far as junior schools are concerned, very few related researches are conducted in China, especially on the teaching of reading.Reading is essential to acquire overall proficiency in English for learners. However, quite a few Junior school students are basically weak in reading English and lack the motivation to further study, because the current teaching methods of English is very boring, which makes things worse. As a result, it becomes very urgent to improve and enrich the teaching media and the teaching methods of English reading in Junior High school in order to further improve the teaching effect and arouse students’interest and initiative in learning English.Based on that, the author decided to choose this topic "Computer Assisted English Reading in Junior High School". The purpose of this thesis is to explore a new approach to English reading instruction assisted by CALL.This thesis firstly presents the obstacles of students’English reading and the feasibility and application of CALL in English reading. After that, the author stated the theoretical basis of CALLIn practice, the author performed an experiment in the experimental class. The experiment lasted18weeks and data was collected through the following instruments-questionnaires which were used twice (before and after the experiment), interviews and two tests (pre-test and post-test). A conclusion could be drawn that the reading ability of experimental class had been greatly improved and the students’interests in English had also been aroused because of the assistance of CALL. But for the control class, the author adopted the same teaching contents and teaching time. Obviously, their reading scores were lower than the experimental class. Finally the author also raises some implications for teachers to improve CALL in teaching reading. If teachers know clearly that how and when to make good use of the computer, it will be much more powerful to create an authentic environment of learning and facilitate reading learning.
