Reading, as a means of understanding and absorbing writteninformation, is the most important one of the four basic language skills.Therefore, it is the core of English teaching and plays a decisive role inthe process.However, there are still some problems in the present Englishteaching, such as preferring teacher’s instructions to student’sparticipation, just paying attention to several top students and ignoringall the students’ development, adopting a sole assessment mode andvaluing the result of learning but not the progress of teaching. As a result,students lack initiative and enthusiasm for reading and are troubled bypoor reading habits and skills.In view of this, the author tries to carry out the “Activity List Guiding”Mode in high school English reading class, which was first launched bythe teaching and research office in Rugao City. This mode treatsstudents as the centre. In this mode, according to the activity listdesigned by teachers, students read the reading materials carefullyand have a better understanding of the content first, and then they areasked to complete the relevant activities on the list. In this process,students discuss and learn the knowledge autonomously through thegroup activity and with the teacher’s guide, supervision and evaluation.Both students and teachers’ cooperation and participation are typicalof the whole process.In this thesis, the author adopts the research methods of literaturestudy, classroom observation, interviews, questionnaires andexperiments to study and apply Activity List Guiding Mode to Englishreading instruction in senior high school. The mode especiallyemphasizes the following links: designing the activity list, setting up thelearning group, the basic procedures of reading class, the feedback and evaluation of the effect of the teaching in a scientific, practicaland systematical way.During the two-month experiment, the author adopts Activity ListGuiding Mode to teach English reading in the experimental class andthe traditional method to teach English reading in the compared class.The results show that Activity List Guiding Mode is more popular with theteachers and the students and that it is more helpful to cultivate thestudents’ integrated language ability compared to the traditionalteaching method. The data shows the students’ scores improvedobviously, which proves that the mode is effective and practical.
