Abstract/Summary:
Based on the IMMEX-C platform developed in China, guided by the concept of IMMEX and problem-solving ability instruction, we apply the chemical problems including the original ones from the United States and new ones designed by the teachers in our school to the research of the study and evaluation of the students’ problem-solving ability in learning chemistry.The research focus on the assessment of the students’chemical problem-solving ability in a comprehensive way, in which the students’thinking process, strategies employed and performance level are all taken into consideration. To achieve a more objective result,450students from14classes and three different grades were involved in the experiment. With the support of computer technology, an objective evaluation is achieved, which deals with the difference in thinking process when dealing with chemistry problems between different students and different classes. Furthermore, the strategies employed by different students in solving chemistry problems are also analyzed in a way of classifying similar and different thinking. The students’ performance and level are assessed in an "efficient-effectiveness" way as well. And their chemistry problem solving abilities are evaluated and analyzed in a new way, the so-called "three-dimension and four-states" designed by us teachers. Meanwhile, this study investigates the IMEX development and the main factors that affect the students’chemistry problem-solving ability. How to design better strategies to improve the students’assessment and how to improve the model to review chemistry in an more efficient way are also studied.The result of the research indicates the advantages of the new evaluation of students’chemistry problem-solving ability based on the IMMEX-C. Different from the traditional assessing method and way, the new evaluation design can record the thinking process of the students in solving problems in an authentic way. By means of the "thinking circuit chart","policy performance chart","strategies analysis chart","four quadrant chart" and so on, the evaluation system can assess not only the students’difference in problem-solving ability but also their development and stability of problem-solving ability in a more direct, scientific and comprehensive way.On the whole, the students’difference in thinking process and strategies adopting can be better analyzed in detail by the corresponding charts and statistics; most students will develop and optimize their thinking, strategies and performance in chemistry problem-solving as they are exposed to more problems of similar type but varied forms. Finally their abilities tend to be stable. With the evaluation and analysis based on IMMEX, the teachers can not only offer the students individualized intervention, but also can improve the teaching of chemistry review to achieve a more effective and more fruitful result...
