Nowadays, international communication is developing at a high speed, so Englishoral communication becomes much more important. Lexical chunks are used a lot inoral communication, and they are the indispensable part of communication language.English learners come into contact with lexical chunks at their English learning’sinitial period. And for high schools’ learners, they’ve already learned a quantity oflexical chunks and they have had the ability to organize primary communicationlanguage.However, most of teachers still use the traditional teaching method all these yearswithout paying attention to or even knowing the function of lexical chunks, so students’communication language shows a tendency of low quantity in lexical chunks, highfrequency in using the same lexical chunks, and simplification in lexical chunks kinds.Therefore, the author did an experiment using lexical chunks teaching method to surveythe characteristics of students’ oral communication language, prove and explain thesignificant functions of lexical chunks for organizing language, and discuss the detailedmethod to reach the aim of helping students use lexical chunks to express fluently.With these questions based on the correlative studies of the lexical chunks byprevious researchers, the author chose two parallel classes in high school and carriedthrough an experiment of oral English teaching in one semester. The author usedtraditional teaching methods in the control class, but various lexical chunks teachingmethods in the experimental class. As far as the expression ability is concerned, thestudents from experimental class do better than the ones from the control class. Theyuse more lexical chunks in their expression, make fewer mistakes, speak more fluentlyand use more diversified lexical chunks. According to the result and analysis of theexperiment, lexical chunks approach helps even with only one semester. This thesis strongly encourages teachers to use some effective teaching methods,such as lexical chunks direct method, lexical chunks with situational method,hierarchical method, cultural integration method and independent learning method, tomake English learners have the learning ability of lexical chunks in high school periodin order to improve their practical communication ability and English comprehensiveskills.
